A neurochip that turns thoughts into speech has been successfully implanted

A neurochip that turns thoughts into speech has been successfully implanted

Researchers at the University of California, Davis, have successfully restored speech by implanting a chip in a human brain.

The system decodes brain signals into text in real time, and a computer speaks the words shown on screen in a human voice.

In particular, the team tested the chip on Casey Harrell, a 45-year-old with limited mobility. As a result, the chip implanted in the patient converted thoughts into speech with 97 percent accuracy.

For context, the system was trained on 125 000 words to decode patients’ thoughts. The team aims to further improve the system in the future.
