Using AI to produce antibiotics is being brought into practice

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania used artificial intelligence to create an antibiotic. According to researcher De la Fuente, developing new antibiotics takes about six years. This process is also extremely labor-intensive and expensive. Antibiotics developed using this approach, however, take less time and could reduce costs.

According to the journal “Nature Biomedical Engineering” (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41551-024-01201-x), this approach could open up new opportunities in antibiotic production.

In addition, antibiotics created using AI represent a new approach in De La Fuente’s laboratory over the past five years.
